Elon Musk’s Boring Company has completed the first stretch of tunnels in Los Angeles. The billionaire CEO posted on Instagram that he hoped to offer free rides to the public in a few months, pending final regulatory approvals. He further clarified that the tunnel system would transport cars after personalized mass transportation needs were met. In addition to transporting people in their cars, the Loop Transportation system will also include passenger pods for bicyclists and pedestrians. According to Musk, pedestrians and cyclists would be given priority over cars, with the cost of utilizing the system less than a bus ticket.

A spokesperson for the Boring Company said they will not seek public funding as the organization has plans to develop new tunneling techniques to cut costs. The company is further seeking a permit to tunnel 2.7 miles in West Los Angeles, but the full vision of the project includes a 60-mile tunnel network. If the plan fully comes to fruition it would be one of the largest subway networks in the United States.
